In the wake of the devastating impact caused by Cyclone Freddy, there has been a resounding call for support to aid those affected. Answering this call with unwavering determination, the Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has stepped forward, exemplifying their commitment to the well-being of their fellow Malawians. In a remarkable display of solidarity, SULOM has generously donated relief items worth K19 million.
During a poignant ceremony held on Sunday, SULOM President, Fleetwood Haiya, handed over 500 bags of assorted relief items to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Blantyre. This remarkable contribution was made possible through the collective efforts of all 16 top-flight league teams, as well as the invaluable support of Nyasa Manufacturing Company and Into Sports Limited, among other well-wishers.
While acknowledging the financial challenges faced by local teams, President Haiya expressed his heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering support and compassion. Despite their own obstacles, these teams have shown an exceptional level of unity and empathy towards their fellow compatriots affected by the cyclone. President Haiya’s appreciation is a testament to the remarkable character and resilience displayed by the clubs.
The Deputy Director of Risk Reduction at DoDMA, Fedson Chikuse, extended his heartfelt appreciation to SULOM for their timely intervention. With over 500 camps still providing refuge for those displaced by the cyclone, the donation is set to alleviate the significant challenges faced by the affected individuals and families. Chikuse emphasized the critical role that SULOM’s contribution would play in bringing relief and hope to those enduring the aftermath of the disaster.
The comprehensive donation includes essential items such as clothing, maize flour, rice, Likuni phala, sugar, salt, soya pieces, cooking oil, soap, and body lotion. Each of the 500 bags contains these vital supplies, which will go a long way in restoring a sense of normalcy and dignity to the lives of those affected.
